Cemetery Maintenance Groundskeeper (Seasonal)

Title: Cemetery Maintenance Groundskeeper

Hours: 4 -6 hour days/week
Pay: $22.00/hour (60 day probationary period)

  • 2 cemetery locations (approx. 12 acres total):
  • Bolton Center Cemetery (34 Hebron Road)
  • Quarryville Cemetery (995 Boston Turnpike)

 Supervision Received

Receives general direction from the Town Wide Facilities Director.   Works with independence while coordinating any additional tasks with the Town Wide Facilities Director.  Establishes priorities as needed.  Reports work accomplished. 

 Scope of Services:

 Cemetery maintenance at the two town cemeteries including but not limited to:

  • Mowing, edging and weed whacking of all green space and around headstones and markers as needed to maintain grass height not to exceed three (3) inches, typical growing season shall be defined as April 15th through November 30th.

  • Trimming around all grave stones and markers within the cemetery so that vegetation around such obstacles does not exceed a height of three (3) inches. This includes removal of any grass clippings from grave stones and markers.

  • Trimming of bushes and brush vegetation around the perimeter monthly to allow clear access to all grave sites and roadways, and to prevent the spread of brush and trees within mowed areas of the cemetery.

  • Removing of any tree or brush growth around grave markers or headstones.
  • Removal of dead flowers from new graves, removing of dead arrangements and grave blankets and other grave decorations in spring and fall.
  • (Spring) first clean up and mow must be done before Mother’s Day.

  • Mowing must be done within one week prior to Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Memorial Day and July 4th. Spring and fall clean-ups include branches, twigs and leaf removal or clearing.

  • Monuments, stones, flowers, shrubs and flags shall be treated with respect and shall not be damaged during maintenance and clean ups. Repairs or replacement will be to the satisfaction of the Town of Bolton.

  • Emptying trash cans.

  • May fill in for other duties assigned in the Buildings and Grounds department as needed.

Qualifications: 

Previous cemetery grounds keeping and/or general grounds keeping is preferred but not required. The Town will consider the individual that demonstrates the skills and abilities to develop effective working relationships with the staff, officials, and public.

Physical Exertion/Environmental Conditions:

Considerable walking, climbing and reaching.  Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.  Highway driving.  Dealing with the general public on a daily basis.
