Maintainer I (Full-Time)
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of parks, grounds, recreational areas,
and public facilities; performs custodian and maintenance work in repair and maintenance of Town
buildings and facilities; operates vehicles and light construction equipment in service of the
Town’s needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Performs manual work in the removal of trees, leaves, brush, trash, and refuse, and in the
replacement of fences, posts, rails, and signs.
• Operates mowers, vehicles, and power equipment to maintain grounds, fields, roads,
beaches, and to clear snow and sand roads, park areas, parking lots, and sidewalks.
• Grades, fertilizes, seeds, and lines playing fields.
• Observes conditions of playing fields and reports unsafe conditions around Town
grounds and facilities to supervisor.
• Performs rough carpentry, minor electrical, plumbing, painting, and masonry work in
maintaining Town buildings and facilities, and performs cleaning duties as necessary.
• Performs preventative maintenance tasks in maintaining and monitoring heating, cooling, and
other mechanical equipment.
• Services vehicles and equipment with fuel, lubricants, and accessories.
• Makes safety check of vehicles, construction, and power equipment while reporting
malfunctions to supervisor.
• Follows standard safety procedures and instructs maintenance helpers in safety matters.
• Opens and closes buildings as necessary.
• Works at the Transfer & Recycling Station as needed.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
• Participates in meetings, seminars, and training sessions; may serve as a member
of various employee committees; serves on working groups as assigned by supervisor.
• Greets visitors to Town buildings and may set up meeting rooms with tables, chairs, and
related equipment.
• Shovels snow and sands walkways.
• Collects and disposes of trash and recycling materials.
• Prepares and maintains necessary work and inventory forms and records.
• Provides additional support for special functions and performs related work as required.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFIECATIONS
Education and Experience
• Two years of work experience in a related field; or
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Good organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to work independently and without supervision.
• Working knowledge of the tools, materials, and methods of the building trades.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and
the general public.
• Working knowledge of safety practices and hazards relating to electrical equipment
operation.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial and grounds
maintenance work.
• Ability to perform carpentry, minor masonry, electrical, and plumbing repairs and
recognize need for repairs.
• Ability to understand, follow, and give both oral and written instructions.
• Ability to add, subtract, and multiply all units of measure.
Special Requirements
• Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Power tools including lawn mowers, string trimmers, drills, saws, and more; hand tools including
hammers, saws, screwdrivers, and more; phone; copy machine; fax machine; and motor vehicles.

Continuous physical effort is required in performing duties. The employee must occasionally lift
and/or move extremely heavy loads. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close

bend, push, pull, lift, lower, kneel, crawl, reach, climb, balance, and sit.
Work is performed in changing settings. The noise level can vary from quiet to loud, with power
tools, vehicles, and machinery contributing to the volume. Often required to work
outdoors under possible adverse weather and climate conditions, including extreme heat, extreme
cold, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Outdoor duties can also require the employee to endure
disagreeable factors such as dust, dirt, grease, and other similar factors.
