Declaration State of Emergency - Burn Ban:

The Town of Bolton has officially declared a State of Emergency to reinforce the State of Connecticut's Burn Ban. Due to the prolonged period of extremely dry weather coupled with the very dry ground and no immediate rain forecasted there is NO BURNING PERMITTED.  This declaration will stay in effect until the state removes its declaration and the state of emergency is lifted.

Senior Center Van Driver

Position Definition

Transporting elderly and disabled residents as assigned by the Director of Senior and Social Services. Driver will transport clients to medical appointments, Senior Center activities, shopping, etc. or as determined by the Director. Drivers will also be responsible for other duties as assigned by the Director or their designee.

Examples of Essential Duties

  1. Checks vehicles that he/she is driving. At beginning and end of shift, a walk around of the vehicle shall be done, as well as check fluid levels, (i.e., oil, washer fluid, etc.), maintenance lights on interior of vehicle and physical damage. Informs supervisor immediately of any malfunction, or maintenance services due. Performs daily basic maintenance of vehicle (i.e. removing trash, papers, etc.).
  2. Follow all motor vehicle laws and regulations including, but not limited to; no talking on cell phone while driving and ensure all vehicle occupants use their safety belt.
  3. Assist residents getting in and out of vehicle as well as helping to carry items, etc. Handle any emergencies that may occur en route or at a residence. Have the ability to judge when to call 911.
  4. Have the ability to maximize pick-ups and routes in an efficient manner and have the ability to adapt to changes in the schedule at any time.

Examples of Incidental Duties

  1. Perform center related duties when not driving vehicles including, but not limited to, answer phones, kitchen assistance, moving and setting up tables, and any miscellaneous duties as determined by the Director or their designee.
  2. Receive and carry out oral and written directions from the Director or their designee.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

Must be able to maintain good working relationships with staff, older adults, disabled individuals and the general public. Must have a compassionate understanding of the elderly, the aging process and their needs. Have the capacity to evaluate priorities and take the initiative to work under a minimum of supervision. Must be competent and able to operate vehicles in accordance with all safety and highway rules and laws. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to cooperate in a congenial manner and maintain good relationships with passengers.

Minimum Qualifications Required

The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

License or Certificate

Current Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with proper endorsement for all vehicles and is subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Physical Exertion/Environmental Conditions

Must be able to sit in the office or vehicle and drive over extended periods of time; assist elderly and disabled person’s board and leave vehicle; to enter and leave medical facilities; lift and carry packages, bending, walking, pushing and pulling. Must be able to life light to medium weight (20 pounds). Some stress involved in public contact.
